23 and 24 Down + Winner

It has been a while since I’ve posted about books I’ve been reading.  I’m still on track to finish 50 Books in 2012 but I need to pick up the pace a bit.

I recently read Admission by Jean Hanff Korelitz–this was a book I picked up from the deep discount table when Borders was going out of business and it has been on my shelf for a while.  It’s the story of a Princeton admissions counselor and it follows her through the recruiting and admissions season and her ups and downs in life.  There’s an affair, a love interest, a child who was given up for adoption, and a big twist at the end.  It’s a relatively light read and I enjoyed it.

A second recent read was a real disappointment.  I read Little Bee when it first came out and really enjoyed it so I was excited to pick up Gold by Chris Cleave.

I thought it would help with my Olympics jet lag.  Not so much.  It’s the story of two British women who are indoor cyclists and they are preparing for London 2012.  There’s a lot of back and forth between past Olympics they have competed in.  In fact, the entire book is short snippets of back and forth.  One of the cyclists has a child (Sophie) who is battling cancer and much of the story is told in Sophie’s voice.  Unfortunately it was a book that I had trouble really getting into and reviews have been tough on this follow-up to Cleave’s best-seller (Little Bee).

In more exciting news, we have a winner of the PRETZILLA ® giveaway!  Congratulations Jill!

Please email me your address (or Twitter DM) and I’ll pass your info on to the folks at Miller Baking Company.  A huge thank you! to Miller Baking Company for this giveaway.
