I’m moving right along with the 50 Books in 2012. In fact, I’m a week behind with posting #4 and will finish reading #5 tonight.
Last week I read The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. This is a beautifully-written book that foodies/cooks would enjoy. It was a quick read and one that I categorize as beach reading or as my 7th grade English teacher Mrs. Hellwig would call bathroom reading.
Chef Lillian hosts a cooking school at her restaurant and throughout the book we get to know the students as they come to class one night a week. There is Claire the young mother struggling with the demands of being a wife and mother, Tom a widower mourning the loss of his wife to cancer, Carl and Helen an older couple whose marriage was tested with betrayal, and a few other characters who you meet along the way.
Throughout the book you get to know the characters, their past, the what and why that they are searching for by way of the cooking class, and Bauermesiter’s writing is simply poetic.
I recommend this book and it’s worth diving into.
Question: What is your kitchen essential ingredient?
Mine is cinnamon. It goes on/in at least 2 meals/day.
I’m on a nutritional yeast kick these days. I add it to everything!
Thanks for the book rec! It sounds great.
I’m still looking for ways to incorporate NY into my meals. I just haven’t been able to embrace the taste.
Let me know if you read the book!
